What It Takes – Implementing EHR Systems
Tue, Sep 29, 2009
In some ways, I hate to admit what I am about to admit, but I cannot help it:
The people that sometimes drive us crazy when they are buying EHR systems turn out to be the very people that we love when they are implementing EHR systems.
You see, as a reseller for NextGen Electronic Health Record systems, we are in business to sell and implement software. In most cases, the “normal” cycle for a typical sale is 2-6 months. Some groups take longer, some groups shorter, depending on the size of the system and the complexity of the group buying the system.
There are times when the process can become quite laborious, or even excruciating, especially when we interact with a physician or office manager who is very detailed-oriented. As the process drags out, we sometimes find ourselves whispering, “Please just buy something, you can’t possibly have any more questions!”
But guess what? It is the same type of personality – obsessive, anal, contemplative, call it what you may – who turns out to be a perfect manager when the system is bought and the implementation process begins.
Because when training starts, it is the office manager or physician who is prepared, who has To Do lists that are checked and cross-referenced, who often becomes the best partner once the implementation starts full-steam ahead.
I guess this is all just a reminder of what our parents told us when we were young – there is no substitute for doing your homework, and knowing your stuff.
